Hello all,
I am Sara. Senior. Major in Mass Communications concentration Film/Media Arts and a minor in Geography. When I grow up I want to be a Broadcast Meteorologists for a television/radio station like WSB. My hobbies include watching television, watching movies (Netflix is my best friend), being on the internet and listening to music. I like to go to sports games especially football, soccer and baseball, oh and Nascar (the Atlanta Motor Speedway is about 5 miles from my house). I ride my bike around campus and you cannot miss it, it's got a metal basket on the back with pink strips on it with reflective tape...if you do see me I am probably looking angry and that is only to concentrate on not hitting anybody...that would be bad...even if I do look mad at the world just wave and if I see you I'll wave back.
Trashy reality television is my favorite thing right now and in particular Dance Moms. I have been watching this show since it began airing in 2011. For those that may not know here is the shows website for any curious people out there. Okay so Dance Moms is a reality show (sort of) and it revolves around the Abby Lee Dance Company Elite Junior Company Dance Team of Pittsburgh, PA. Currently features 7 girls aged 7-15, their overprotective, opinionated and outrageously loud mothers and their equally loud dance teacher Abby Lee Miller. Okay so each week the girls go to competitions and compete for the 1st place and for the top spot of the ALDC pyramid (there can only be one winner and second is the first to lose). I loose anyone. This article explains it better than I do.
This article also delves into the fundamental issue I have will this show. It is very much a show that I have to see every week just because I am so hooked on...I would call it a necessary evil. My dad hates this show so much and I can see why, the woman, Abby Lee Miller degrades the children going so far as to call one "evil and a sneak." It is wrong but I -and many other people - cannot stop watching it. So I do have positive view of the show except for one issue...the "reality" bit.
Like a lot of other reality shows the reality is stretched into creating characters that invoke polarity for people - love or hate, they are recognizable. And soon a show that was all real emotion is starting to become staged situations - the emotions are still real but the reality surrounding it is not. Also heavy editing makes a situation and reactions seem real when in fact they happened for a different thing. Moms have said they shoot of 60 hours worth of material for a 40 minute show each week. And this is covered up through contracts that are strict about speaking out...but some of the dance moms have rebelled and during meet and greets have told the audience some of the truth.
It is crazy to see developed this show has become from the beginning to now. It was only supposed to be six episodes long and the Season 3 just ended on Tuesday, it had 37 episodes in it alone. So the progression of the show is fantastic to see but the "reality" is becoming too much lately and the same nonsense happens every week...in the words of one of the girls..."The girls dance, the moms fight and Abby screams..."
But I can't stop watching, I love it too much. This is my guilty pleasure show.
Hope you enjoyed learning about me and sorry for the horrendous grammar issues...:)
Sara
